When I was browsing quilt fabrics online, I found a couple of panels picturing deer in the woods and decided to use one to make a quilt for my husband. The finished quilt will measure 60” wide by 90” long. The panel measures roughly 35” x 45” so I need to add a couple of rows of blocks to it.
Using fabrics that coordinate well with the panel, I’ll add a 4” border, 1” sashing, and 1” sashing around the panel. On the sides, between the border and the panel, I will fussy cut another fabric printed with small scenes of deer in the woods, and I’ll give them a ½” border. I’m taking my cue from the scene printed fabric and using black for all the borders and sashing. That should be enough to get a 60” width.
To get the 90” length, I will add four rows of pieced blocks, two directly above and two directly below the panel. Star blocks will be 4-1/2” squares. I will need ten or eleven for each of the two star rows. I will make 22, just in case. I cut 22 2-1/2” squares, 176 1-1/2” squares, 88 rectangles 1-1/2 x 2-1/2”, and 88 1-1/2” squares. I marked each of the 176 1-1/2”squares with a diagonal line using a fabric pen. Now the star blocks are ready to assemble. I’ll add a ½” border on either side of the star blocks.
The other two rows will consist of foundation paper-piecing trees that I have used before. I’m using a free pattern I found online, enlarged just enough to get a 6” x 9” tree block. I printed enough to make two tree rows and a couple of extras in case I mess up. I’ll add a ½” borders between each block. A 1” border will go between this row and the star row. This should give me at least 90” in length.
For the backing, I will use 100% cotton flannel and a low loft wool blend batting to make the quilt warm and cozy. I ordered a dark blue flannel all-over print because I’ll need to piece it together since I couldn’t find what I wanted in a 108” width.
Now that I have everything together, it’s time to get started!
Thanks for stopping by.
